While he was promising to come and marry me, he had been preparing to marry her.
And while I was lying awake at night imagining our future child, he had been planning a future with another woman.
I called him immediately.
This time, he answered.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “who is Vanessa?”
There was a pause.
“Where did you hear that name?”
I laughed bitterly.
“So the photograph is real.”
“Amara, listen to me.”
“No. You listen to me. Is she your fiancée?”
He said nothing.
“Daniel, answer me!”
“Yes.”
The word came out so quietly that I almost wished I hadn’t heard it.
I pressed a hand against my mouth.
“You are going to marry another woman?”
“Amara, things are complicated.”
“What is complicated? You have been with me for seven years!”
“I know.”
“You called me your wife! You promised to marry me!”
“I know what I said.”
