For the next half hour, I tried to enjoy myself. I spoke with two women who worked in fashion and a young businessman who spent most of the conversation bragging about his new sports car.
Then a handsome man wearing a black shirt approached me.
He appeared to be in his early thirties. His watch was expensive, his shoes were spotless, and he had the kind of smile that made people feel as though he had already decided they were interesting.
“You’re new here,” he said.
“Is it that obvious?”
“Only because everyone else seems to know where they’re going.”
I laughed.
“Maybe I’m just enjoying the scenery.”
“Then I hope the scenery is treating you well.”
He introduced himself as Adrian.
We talked about university, travel, and the kind of careers we imagined having in five years. He was charming without appearing to try too hard, and I gradually forgot how nervous I had been.
