Whenever she entered a room, people noticed.
She wore expensive perfumes, carried designer handbags, and seemed to have an endless supply of money. Sometimes she arrived at university in a different luxury car every few weeks.
Naturally, I wondered how she managed it.
One afternoon, I found her sitting in our apartment, painting her nails while scrolling through her phone.
“Beatrice, can I ask you something?”
She didn’t look up.
“That depends. Are you asking me for money or asking me how to make it?”
I laughed.
“Neither. Well, perhaps the second one.”
She immediately put down her nail polish.
“Finally! My little sister is ready to listen.”
“Seriously, Beatrice. How do you afford everything? You don’t even seem to worry about money.”
She smiled as though I had finally asked the right question.
“Helen, let me ask you something first. Are your parents rich?”
“They’re comfortable.”
“Do they give you money?”
