I thought about the girl I had been only a few hours earlier, the girl who believed that a good education and hard work would be enough to build a comfortable future.
I wondered what she would think of me.
Perhaps she would understand.
Perhaps she would be disappointed.
I didn’t know.
Adrian interrupted my thoughts.
“Helen, are you nervous?”
“A little.”
“That’s understandable.”
“What if I change my mind?”
“Then you change your mind. You can leave at any point.”
I nodded, trying to believe him.
When the car stopped outside the hotel, Adrian checked his phone again.
“I need to handle something at reception. Go up to the suite and wait for me. I’ll be there shortly.”
He gave me a key card.
“Room 608.”
“You’re not coming with me?”
“Two minutes. I promise.”
I looked at the hotel entrance, then at the key card.
Something inside me whispered that I should leave.
