I stopped cleaning up after my husband for just a few days… but what he said that evening made me realize our entire marriage had been built on one terrible lie

Today, I am not writing this because I want anyone to feel sorry for me.

I’m writing it for the woman who keeps telling herself:

“It’s just a small thing.”

“All men are like this.”

“It’s not worth arguing about.”

“Maybe I’m expecting too much.”

Please listen to me.

The problem isn’t the socks.

The problem begins when a man knows you’re exhausted and still leaves them on the floor because he knows you’ll eventually bend down and pick them up.

The problem isn’t the dishes.

The problem is when someone doesn’t choose you as a partner, but as a person who will keep their life organized, make their world comfortable, stay quiet, and eventually feel guilty for being tired.

The most painful thing Ryan ever said to me was:

“I chose you precisely for this.”

But those words eventually gave me something I had forgotten I had.

A choice of my own.

Because after ten years of putting everyone else’s comfort before mine, I finally made the most important decision of my life.

I chose myself.

And I want every woman reading this to remember something:

You are not difficult because you want help.

You are not selfish because you are tired.
