Then silence while she reviewed the account.
“I do see the scheduled transfer,” she said. “Because this is a joint account, either account holder can initiate transactions. However, since it has not processed, I can place a temporary hold pending fraud review.”
“Do that.”
“I’ll need to ask whether you believe the other account holder is acting fraudulently.”
I looked at the wedding photo on my desk.
Lucas in a navy suit.
Me in ivory lace.
His hand at my waist.
Both of us smiling as though the future were something we had agreed on.
“Yes,” I said. “I do.”
The word felt heavier than expected.
The representative’s tone changed, becoming softer but more formal.
She explained that the account would be restricted. No outgoing transfers without additional verification. She advised me to consult an attorney immediately. She gave me a case number, repeated it twice, and told me I would receive documentation by email.
When the call ended, I remained at the desk, pen still in hand, staring at the case number written across the back of an old grocery receipt.
That was when Lucas texted.
“Boarding went smoothly. I miss you already. Don’t forget to eat something, okay? Love you.”
