Two weeks later, Monica’s landlord, Mr. Alvarez, knocked on my door.
I had known him for years. He had been friends with my late husband before moving out of state.
“I thought you deserved to hear this from me,” he said.
I raised my eyebrows.
“And?”
“Her lease is up next month. I won’t be renewing it.”
I blinked.
“Because of the video?”
“No. The video made me take a closer look at everything.”
I glanced toward Monica’s house.
“For once, she wasn’t watching me through the window.”
Apparently, getting caught using my electricity wasn’t her only problem.
And then Mr. Alvarez told me what he had discovered.
“She’s behind on several utility payments. I inspected the house, too. There’s damage she never reported—and a few repairs she made without permission.”
I stood there quietly.
For months, I had thought my problem was simply a neighbor who didn’t respect boundaries.
But now I realized there had been much more happening behind that front door.
Karma had already started knocking.
And Monica hadn’t even realized it yet.
