— The Truth on the Screen
The enormous LED screen behind the altar flickered.
Everyone expected photographs of Nadine and her fiancé.
Instead, a document appeared.
The probate affidavit.
Dad’s signature was highlighted in red.
Gasps moved through the ballroom.
“Thirty days ago,” I said, “my father signed this document under penalty of perjury.”
I walked slowly down the aisle.
“He claimed I lived somewhere in Europe and couldn’t be found.”
People turned toward Dad.
“He knew exactly where I lived.”
“He had my phone number.”
“He had my address.”
“He had been receiving money from me.”
The room became quieter.
Then I revealed the number.
“My grandmother left $470,000.”
“My lawful share was $117,500.”
“And my family tried to take it.”
Nadine suddenly screamed.
“Turn that screen off!”
I looked at her.
“I wouldn’t advise shouting.”
The screen changed.
The waiver appeared.
“They forced me to sign this document.”
Dad stepped forward.
“You have no proof!”
I smiled.
“They were so confident that they didn’t notice one small detail.”
I pointed to the signature.
“I signed it with my left hand.”
A forensic handwriting expert had already examined it.
The signature was being challenged as fraudulent and coerced.
Dad’s face turned purple.
“This is a private family matter!”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Then I reached for my phone.
“Let’s listen to how private it really was.”
I pressed play.
Dad’s recorded voice filled the ballroom.
“If that girl discovers the $470,000 inheritance, everything is ruined.”
The room froze.
Then Mom’s voice followed.
“We need her name removed tonight.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Nadine’s fiancé stared at her.
Then at her parents.
And slowly, he stepped away from the altar.
What happened next was the moment Nadine’s entire future collapsed in front of three hundred people.
