— The Signature

Dad was waiting for me.

The moment I walked inside, he threw the waiver onto the table.

“Sign it or leave.”

Nadine barely looked up from her phone.

“Stop sabotaging the family.”

I looked at the three of them.

They needed me scared.

They needed me obedient.

Most of all, they needed me to believe I had no power.

So I lowered my eyes.

“Fine.”

Dad uncapped the pen.

My heart was pounding.

I knew exactly what they wanted.

And I knew I had to give them what they expected.

I accepted the pen with my left hand.

I had been right-handed my entire life.

Then I wrote one slow, unnatural signature.

Dad didn’t notice.

He was too excited.

The moment I finished, their entire attitude changed.

Mom opened another bottle of wine.

Nadine started talking about plans for the future.

Dad smiled as if he had just won a battle.

I quietly packed my suitcase.

At the door, I turned around.

“I hope the $470,000 you stole from Grandma purchases the peace you’re going to need.”

Dad’s wineglass slipped from his hand.

It shattered against the hardwood.

I walked outside.

A vehicle was waiting for me.

Once inside, I pulled out my phone and sent one message to the estate attorney I had contacted earlier.

The bait is taken. They have the waiver. Begin the next phase.

Then I watched my parents’ house disappear behind me.

They thought they had just defeated me.

They had no idea they had walked directly into the trap.

Thirty days later, they would discover just how expensive their victory had become.
