At the party, Eleanor approached me with a small envelope.
“I’ve been meaning to give you this,” she said.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
She had written it herself.
It read:
Dear Marcus,
I have wanted to thank you for what happened at the grocery store, but I have struggled to find the right words.
Your brother helped me when I felt ashamed, frightened, and helpless. He reminded me that my circumstances did not make me less worthy of kindness.
But you helped me, too.
You raised a boy who knows that another person’s pain matters. You gave him the freedom to grow, even though I know you must have been frightened when he began doing things independently.
Please don’t ever think that the only way to protect someone you love is to keep them away from the world.
Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give the people we love is the confidence to walk into that world with kindness, courage, and the knowledge that they can ask for help when they need it.
