I Sent My 15-Year-Old Autistic Brother to the Grocery Store Alone for the First Time. Fifteen Minutes Later, a Cashier Came Out Crying and Told Me, “You Need to Come Inside. You Won’t Believe What Your Brother Has Done.”

He looked down at the page.

“One day, I went to the grocery store to buy chocolate. I saw a lady who was crying because she did not have enough money to buy food for her grandson.”

He paused.

“I had ten dollars. It was not enough to pay for everything. So I asked people if they wanted to help.”

He looked up.

“Some people gave money. Some people gave a little. Some people gave more. The lady got her food.”

The room was silent.

Theo looked back at the page.

“I learned that you do not have to be rich to help someone. You do not have to fix every problem. Sometimes you can help with one part.”

He paused again.

“And you should not make people feel bad when they need help. You don’t know what happened to them before you met them.”

He folded the paper.

“Thank you.”
