The total contribution was much larger than anyone had expected.
There was enough to cover everything Eleanor had originally selected, with some money left over for additional essentials.
The manager also offered to arrange a gift card for her through the store’s community assistance program.
And all of it had begun because a fifteen-year-old boy had asked a simple question.
“Are there people who want to help?”
I stared at the shopping cart.
Then I looked at the ten-dollar bill I had given Theo.
“Did you spend all your money?” I asked.
He nodded.
“Except I got change from the chocolate.”
He reached into his pocket and showed me a few coins.
“I still bought it.”
I laughed despite the tears gathering in my eyes.
“Yes, buddy. You still bought it.”
Then he frowned slightly.
“Marcus, are you angry because I didn’t come home straight away?”
The question brought me back to the reason I had rushed to the store.
