“I don’t know how it happened.”
“You do know.”
He looked down.
“It happened because every day you made a choice.”
He began to cry.
And that confused me.
Because once, his tears would have been enough to make me forget everything.
But this time, I didn’t see heartbreak.
I saw fear.
Fear of losing his comfortable life.
“Will you forgive me?” he asked.
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
“We could go to therapy.”
“You didn’t want to spend one night in a hotel with me. But you spent nights in hotels with other women.”
He lowered his head.
“I know.”
“The worst part is that you made me believe I was the reason.”
He didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing he could say.
The Separation
I didn’t file for divorce that same night.
My lawyer had been right.
I shouldn’t make an irreversible decision while I was still in shock.
But Georgi moved out the next day.
I didn’t scream at him.
I didn’t throw his clothes out the window.
We sat down and made a list.
What he would take.
What would stay.
What needed to be handled financially.
