Some buildings were gone.
Others looked smaller than I remembered.
I had spent 30 years imagining this place frozen exactly as I left it.
It had gone on without me.
So had everyone in that car.
My sister reached for my hand.
I pulled mine away.
Her face crumpled.
“I deserved that.”
“Where are we going?”
“Dad’s house.”
I stared at her.
“You mean our house.”
She nodded.
“Mom still lives there.”
My pulse quickened.
“Does she know I’m coming?”
“She knows your flight landed.”
“Does she know Callum is here?”
“No.”
Callum glanced at us in the mirror.
“That’s why I came.”
I looked at the box again.
“What did you find?”
He was silent.
“Callum.”
“I found the box behind a false panel in your father’s study.”
My stomach turned.
“The same study?”
“Yes.”
My sister closed her eyes.
I looked at her.
“You knew about that too?”
“Only recently.”
The car stopped at a red light.
Callum gripped the wheel.
“Your father asked me to help him move some papers yesterday. He could barely get out of bed. While I was in the study, he told me there was something hidden behind the lower bookshelf.”
“And you just happened to find my wedding shoe box?”
