I Ran Away the Night Before My Wedding and Never Spoke to My Family – 30 Years Later, My Former Groom Was Waiting at the Airport

When the plane landed, my hands were cold.

I collected my suitcase and walked through the terminal slowly.

Every older man made me think of my father.

Every woman with gray in her hair made me wonder what my mother looked like now.

But when I walked outside the airport… I froze.

Callum was standing beside a black car.

Thirty years older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakably him.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

The last time I had seen him, we had been hours away from becoming husband and wife.

Now his face carried lines I did not recognize.

“What are you doing here?”

He stared at me like he’d seen a ghost.

“Your sister didn’t send me.”

My insides went tense.

“Then how did you know which flight I was on?”

Callum stepped closer.

“Eloise… I need you to listen before your family knows you’re here.”

He opened the car door.

On the back seat was a dusty white box.

My name was written across it in my mother’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the box my wedding shoes had come in.

“I found this at your father’s house yesterday,” Callum said.

I picked it up.

My hands began to shake.
