I Ran Away the Night Before My Wedding and Never Spoke to My Family – 30 Years Later, My Former Groom Was Waiting at the Airport
Between them was a teenage boy I did not recognize.
My mother covered her mouth.
“His name was Peter.”
“Who was he?”
“A friend of Callum’s.”
I looked toward the front window.
Callum was still outside.
My mother spoke softly.
“Five years before your wedding, Callum and Peter were in a car accident.”
I felt my pulse in my throat.
“Was Callum driving?”
“No.”
I looked at the photograph again.
“Then what did he do?”
“Nothing.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Footsteps came from the hallway.
My sister returned carrying a small tape recorder.
“Dad wants you to hear this before you see him.”
I stared at it.
“What is that?”
“His confession.”
The room seemed to shrink.
She pressed play.
My father’s voice came through weak and uneven.
“Eloise, if you’re hearing this, then I finally ran out of time.”
I stopped breathing.
“Peter was driving that night. He lost control near the river road. Callum survived. Peter didn’t.”
I looked at my mother.
My father’s recording continued.
“But Peter wasn’t just Callum’s friend.”
My mother began sobbing.
My father took a shaky breath on the tape.
“He was my son.”
I went still.
“Your mother knew. Callum knew. I made them promise never to tell you.”
