I opened the wrong door on the fiftieth floor and saw what the most powerful woman in the company had been hiding — the next morning she put eighty-five thousand dollars on the desk.

So I wrote the pass number down.

C-4118.

I wrote it in the back of the notebook I keep for hours and consumables, because that is what you do when somebody who should not be on a secure floor is on a secure floor with a story that does not work.

Nine years in the army and a very boring job in it, and the entire content of that job was noticing when something was in the wrong place.

And then I wrote down every date she came.

Eleven dates between the twelfth of June and the thirtieth of September.

I did not do anything with them. I did not report it, and I have been asked about that four times since, twice by lawyers.

The honest answer is that I raised it once, in July, with Desh, and he said he’d look into it, and then nothing happened, and I am a night cleaner on a four-year contract with an eviction notice coming and I did not push it.
