I began asking questions.
Every time I did, Claire gave me the same answer.
“Please, Daniel. They’re family.”
The first time she said it, I let it go.
The tenth time, I became uncomfortable.
The twentieth time, I became suspicious.
But I still didn’t act.
Because I thought keeping the peace was more important than being right.
I didn’t understand yet that silence has a price.
Sometimes the price is money.
Sometimes it is dignity.
And sometimes it is your family.
Our daughter Sophie was sixteen when everything finally broke.
She was the kind of girl who noticed things adults tried to hide.
She knew her grandfather looked down on me.
She knew her uncles laughed about me.
She knew I could afford far more than I ever showed.
But she had never asked me why.
Maybe she was waiting for me to tell her.
I wish I had.
Instead, Christmas Eve arrived.
