“Daniel?”
No answer.
“Rachel?”
Still nothing.
I walked upstairs.
Then I heard voices from the bedroom hallway.
They stopped as soon as I approached.
I found Rachel standing outside the guest room.
Daniel was coming out of our bedroom.
“What are you two doing?” I asked.
Daniel looked surprised.
“Nothing.”
Again.
That word.
Nothing.
I looked at Rachel.
She wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“I thought you were at the store,” Daniel said.
“I forgot my wallet.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
Something felt wrong.
But I couldn’t prove anything.
So I said nothing.
That evening, I asked Daniel casually,
“Were you and Rachel talking upstairs?”
“Yeah.”
“About what?”
He sighed.
“Why does it matter?”
The question caught me off guard.
“I was just asking.”
“She needs advice about her apartment.”
“Okay.”
I turned away.
Then he said,
“Seriously, you’re imagining things lately.”
I froze.
“Things like what?”
He hesitated.
“Nothing.”
There it was again.
I looked at him.
“Daniel, if something is bothering you, you can tell me.”
“Nothing is bothering me.”
He kissed my forehead.
“Relax.”
I wanted to.
I really did.
But something inside me had changed.
I started watching.
Not spying.
At least that’s what I told myself.
Just watching.
