I let a homeless elderly man sleep on my porch during a terrible summer storm. By morning, he was gone—but what he left beneath my doormat brought me to tears.

A reminder from someone who loved you long before you understood why:

Know what you own.

Know what you owe.

Know what you sign.

Love deeply.

Trust carefully.

And never confuse trust with surrender.

I still have the key.

I still have the quilt.

I still have Estelle’s notebook.

But now, when I look at them, I don’t think about what I lost.

I think about what I found.

I found my voice.

I found my courage.

I found a business.

I found a friendship.

I found a daughter who watched me rebuild and learned that starting over is not the same as starting from nothing.

And most importantly, I found myself.

I once believed I had nothing left.

Now I know better.

I had Lily.

I had a kitchen.

I had two hands.

I had my mother’s words.

I had enough flour to make one loaf.

Enough courage to make another.
