I had eighteen dollars and no childcare, so I took my eight-month-old to work — and at ten past five the blanket in the linen store was empty.

His mother got him back. She never worked the same hours again and they never got straight again and she died at fifty-one.

So an eight-month-old on a folded blanket behind the linen is not, to that man, a scandal.

It is a Tuesday in 1979.

And he sat in a chair for fifty minutes with my daughter on him and did not ring anybody, because he was working out how to make sure that what happened to him in 1980 did not happen to her.

Then it got complicated.

At twenty to six, Priscilla Adelmann pulled my staff file to write the incident up.

Which is, on its face, the correct thing to do.

And in that file there is an emergency contact.

Corin Brace.

My ex. Fern’s father. We split in the November of 2024 and I had not changed that form in eleven months.

She rang it.

And ringing an emergency contact about an unaccompanied infant is defensible and I have been told so by three people and I accept it.

What is not defensible is what she said on that call, which I have from Bo on the pass, who heard her end of it.

At five past seven there were three of them in that corridor.

Corin. His mother Deborah. And Priscilla Adelmann standing slightly behind them with her arms folded.

And Deborah Brace had a folder.

Because this was not an accident.

On the twenty-fifth of September, three weeks earlier, Deborah Brace had made a referral about me.

I did not know. You are not always told.

And she had been waiting for something to put in it.

And a manager rang her son at twenty to six and handed her the whole thing.

What happened in that corridor.

They asked for the baby.

Not politely and not once. Deborah Brace said the words “we’ll take her tonight” four times in about two minutes.

And Wim Stroud came up those stairs with Fern still on him.

And he did three things and none of them were dramatic.

One. He did not hand her over. To anybody.
