I slowly stepped into the swimming pool.
At first, I felt terribly uncomfortable.
I kept thinking about how I looked, how big my stomach was, and whether my legs appeared too heavy.
But after a few minutes, I started swimming.
Then I splashed water toward Grandpa.
He burst out laughing.
And for the first time in years, I laughed without thinking about my appearance.
When I climbed out of the pool, Grandpa suggested we take a picture together.
“No, Grandpa! I’ll look terrible in the photo.”
“Then we’ll both look terrible,” he laughed. “But at least we’ll look happy!”
We placed his phone on the table and set the camera timer.

In the first picture, I covered my stomach with my hands.
In the second, I tried turning sideways.
But just before the third picture, Grandpa suddenly made a ridiculous face and shouted:
“Emily, this isn’t a beauty contest! This is our life!”
