I had a baby at 79, and my children went to court to have me declared mentally incompetent—But when the judge asked who the baby’s father was, the courtroom door opened…

George looked at me.

“I think it was someone from our family.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

He nodded.

“I think someone I knew helped them.”

“Who?”

He closed his eyes.

“I don’t remember.”

Then suddenly, upstairs, Emily began crying.

I stood immediately.

But George didn’t move.

He was staring at the photograph.

At the red circle around Daniel’s face.

And then I saw something I hadn’t noticed before.

There was another figure in the background.

A woman.

Partially hidden behind a metal structure.

I picked up the photograph.

“George.”

He looked.

I pointed.

“Who is that?”

His eyes widened.

He stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

“Where did you get this?”

“I told you. It was outside.”

He took the photograph from me.

His hands were shaking.

“Margaret…”

“What?”

He stared at the woman.

“I know her.”

“Who is she?”

He didn’t answer.

“George!”

He finally looked at me.

“She’s the reason I never came home.”

And upstairs, our baby daughter kept crying.

Neither of us knew that before the day was over, someone would come looking for us.

And this time, they wouldn’t leave a photograph at the door.

They would come inside.

  1. I bet there was a “sperm bank” involved!! Right? When her husband knew he was going to die, they decided to save some sperm in case she eventually wanted to have more children. So it seems she did!

    1. You’re definitely thinking in the right direction! 👀 There was something preserved from their fertility treatment years earlier—but the story explains exactly what it was and how it made the pregnancy possible. Keep reading because that part comes later. ❤️
