Six months earlier, Susan and Michael had called me every Sunday.
They had come to my house for dinner.
They had brought flowers on my birthday.
Michael had once told his friends, “Our mother is the strongest woman I know.”
Then I became pregnant.
Everything changed.
Susan was the first to find out.
She had come to my house one afternoon and found me sitting at the kitchen table with my hands resting over my stomach.
I still remembered the look on her kface.
“Mom,” she had whispered, “why are you smiling like that?”
I had smiled even wider.
“Because I’m going to have a baby.”
She stared at me.
Then she laughed.
Not because she was happy.
Because she thought I was joking.
When she realized I wasn’t, the color disappeared from her face.
“You’re serious?”
“I’m completely serious.”
“Mom, you’re seventy-nine.”
“I know.”
“You can’t be pregnant at seventy-nine.”
“The doctors say I am.”
She sat down slowly.
For almost a minute, she said nothing.
Then came the first question.
“Who is the father?”
I had looked at her.
“I’ll tell you when the time is right.”
She didn’t like that answer.
Neither did Michael.
Within two weeks, they were questioning my doctors.

I bet there was a “sperm bank” involved!! Right? When her husband knew he was going to die, they decided to save some sperm in case she eventually wanted to have more children. So it seems she did!
