I Drove My Friend’s Mom Home… Then She Leaned In, “Take Me Somewhere Quiet.” I Never Regretted It

Karen smiled.

“That’s what you used to say when I wanted to open a bookstore.”

He went quiet.

She continued.

“You were wrong then, and you’re wrong now.”

Michael gathered his folder.

“This is a mistake.”

“Perhaps. But it’s my mistake to make.”

He left without another word.

Karen watched him through the window until he disappeared around the corner.

Then she turned toward me.

“Was that too much?”

I stared at her.

“Karen, that was magnificent.”

She laughed.

“I thought so.”

But the real victory came two weeks later.

The development company announced a revised acquisition plan. The owners of several neighboring properties had agreed to sell, but Karen had refused.

Without her storefront, the company’s original layout no longer worked.

The project managers approached her with a different proposal: a long-term commercial lease arrangement that would allow Second Chapter to remain in place while the surrounding block was redeveloped.
