Vanessa shifted her weight.
“But I also never agreed to become permanently responsible for your daughter’s transportation. I offered a favor, and over time, you began treating that favor like an obligation.”
“That is not true,” she snapped.
I pulled out my phone and opened her message from the previous evening.
“Your exact words were, ‘Is your car fixed? Sophie needs picking up at 7:20 tomorrow. I have Pilates.’ Not one word about Emma. Not one word about what happened.”
Vanessa glanced at the screen.
“Because I assumed you understood that we have a routine!”
“A routine we never agreed to.”
She looked toward the crowd as though she expected someone to rescue her.
Nobody did.
Finally, she said, “You never complained about driving Sophie before.”
I took a breath.
“Because I didn’t mind helping. But me not complaining didn’t mean you were entitled to my time forever.”
Greg nodded slowly.
