I suspected she had spent the morning listening to adults argue about something she wished had never happened.
Rachel stepped forward beneath her umbrella.
“Emma can ride with us this morning,” she announced. “And any other morning she needs a ride.”
Greg lifted his coffee cup.
“Same here.”
I covered my face with one hand.
“Oh, my goodness.”
Vanessa spun toward me.
“Don’t pretend you didn’t organize this!”
“I didn’t.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I didn’t even know this was happening until you started pounding on my door.”
Greg cleared his throat.
“For the record, Sarah didn’t organize anything. The kids came up with the idea.”
He pointed toward his daughter, Mia, who was holding a sign nearly as big as she was.
“Mia came home furious yesterday. She told us what happened, and then she talked to her friends. Apparently, several of these kids have been discussing it since school let out.”
