I stared at him.
“She had a life insurance policy. And a savings account. I handled the paperwork after she died.”
“Was there a trust established for Sofia?”
The word struck me like a blow.
“A trust?”
I remembered the lawyer who had helped us during Elena’s illness. He had explained that a small portion of the insurance settlement would be placed in a protected account for Sofia’s future education and living expenses.
I had signed the documents.
I had believed everything was settled.
“I thought the account was being managed properly,” I said.
The investigator looked back at the papers.
“These documents suggest someone may have been accessing information about that account.”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Who?”
He did not speculate.
Instead, he showed me a copy of a letter bearing Patricia’s name.
The letter was addressed to a financial institution and referred to Sofia’s account as though Patricia had authority over it.
