I came back for a folder and found my eight-month-pregnant wife crouched under our dining table while my mother shoved fish b0nes toward her mouth.

That is the version that was being built, and it was about six weeks from being finished.

Eleven minutes.

That is the entire margin. Nineteen minutes to eight instead of eight o’clock, because a man forgot a blue folder on a hall table.

And every time somebody tells me I was not to blame because I could not have known — which is kindly meant, and which I have stopped arguing about out loud — what I think is this:

I did not find out because I worked it out.

I found out because I came back for something I had left behind.
