“From our account.”
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
She spoke quickly, as if speed might make the explanation more convincing.
Some money had gone toward debts she had never told Daniel about. Some had been set aside because she wasn’t sure the marriage would last. Some had been used during the months she was seeing Mark.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
When she finally stopped, he asked, “You were preparing for our marriage to fail before we even got married?”
“No. I was scared.”
“So was I. I married you anyway.”
She reached across the table, but he pulled his hand away.
“Please,” she whispered. “I love you.”
He looked at her with an expression I had never seen on his face before.
“I don’t know what you love. I don’t know which parts of our marriage were real.”
Mark suddenly reached toward Jenna.
It was a small movement, almost instinctive.
