His Dying Wife Asked Him to Find His First Love—But What He Learned After 40 Years Left Him Completely Shattered

Nothing.

I contacted former classmates.

Some didn’t remember her.

Others remembered her but had no idea where she had gone.

I spent evenings sitting at my computer, typing variations of her name into search engines.

Sometimes I found people who looked like her.

None of them were.

I almost gave up several times.

Then, one Saturday morning, I received a message from an old college acquaintance.

His name was Michael.

I hadn’t spoken to him in more than twenty years.

He wrote:

“I think I know who you’re looking for.”

My hands started shaking.

I called him immediately.

“Michael?”

“David?”

“Yes.”

There was silence.

Then he said, “Is this about Anna?”

I swallowed.

“How do you know?”

“Because someone else asked me about you years ago.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who?”]

Michael hesitated.

“Anna.”

I sat down.

“What did she want?”

“I don’t know exactly. She was trying to find you.”

“When?”

“Long ago.”

“How long?”

“More than thirty years.”

I couldn’t breathe properly.

“Did she find me?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know.”

I asked him if he had any contact information.

He said he would look.

Two days later, he sent me an address.

Four hours away.

I stared at the address for a long time.
