I slowly unfolded the paper.
There were only a few paragraphs.
But before I could read them, Anna spoke.
“David, I need you to understand something before you continue.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“Carol wasn’t the only person who made a mistake all those years ago.”
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Anna lowered her eyes.
“I was angry. I was young. I was scared. And when Carol came to me, I believed something she told me.”
“What did she tell you?”
“She told me you had chosen your career over me.”
I felt something inside me break.
“I never chose my career over you.”
“I know that now.”
“Then why did you believe her?”
“Because she showed me something.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
I stared at her.
“My letter?”
She nodded.
“But it wasn’t the letter you just read.”
My heart began beating faster.
“What do you mean?”
Anna reached into the drawer again and pulled out another envelope.
This one was much older.
She placed it beside the first.
“Carol showed me a letter supposedly written by you.”
I opened it.
The handwriting looked like mine.
The words were cruel.
They said I had changed my mind.
That I no longer wanted marriage.
