I stared at her.
“What?”
“Carol found me.”
“When?”
“Decades ago.”
“Why?”
Anna looked directly into my eyes.
“Because I tried to find you.”
I couldn’t speak.
Anna continued.
“I searched for you because I wanted to know what happened to the man I had loved.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“I tried.”
“But you never did.”
“I did.”
She shook her head.
“David, I did everything I could.”
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
“Then what happened?”
Anna’s eyes filled with tears.
“Carol happened.”
I stood up.
“No.”
Anna didn’t move.
“She came to see me.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew I was looking for you.”
I stared at her.
“How?”
Anna took a deep breath.
“That is the part you deserve to know.”
She walked to a cabinet and opened a drawer.
From inside, she removed an old envelope.
It was yellowed with age.
She placed it on the table.
My name was written across the front.
My full name.
In handwriting I recognized immediately.
My own.
I stared at it.
“Where did you get that?”
Anna whispered:
“Carol gave it to me.”
My legs felt weak.
I sat down.
“What is inside?”
“A letter.”
“From me?”
