HE STOPPED TO SAVE A DYING STRANGER ON THE HIGHWAY—THREE DAYS LATER, HIS BOSS FIRED HIM FOR BEING “UNRELIABLE.”

I smiled.

“Not for a second.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

I looked at the crowd.

Then back at her.

“You know what I regret?”

“What?”

“That it took getting fired for me to realize I was allowed to choose what mattered.”

Margaret smiled.

“You didn’t lose your life that morning, Sebastian.”

She paused.

“You found it.”

I looked at my wife and daughters.

For years, I’d thought my job was the thing I had to protect to protect them.

I finally understood.

The job was never the life.

They were.

And the woman I stopped for on that highway hadn’t taken anything from me.

She had unknowingly given me the chance to see what I’d been too busy working to notice.

Sometimes the moment that destroys the life you planned is the same moment that makes room for the life you were supposed to have.

I stopped that day because a stranger was dying.

I lost my job because I was late.

And when I went back for my things, I thought I was collecting what remained of my old life.

I was wrong.

I was collecting the beginning of my new one.
