Dad looked utterly paralyzed. For the first time in my existence, the man who always had a sarcastic comeback was entirely speechless. I stood beside him, completely overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the gesture.
“Open it,” Rick urged gently.
Dad reached out with a trembling hand. He pulled the first envelope from the stack. Then a second. He peeked inside the flap. It was filled with crisp hundred-dollar bills. The next one contained a substantial cashier’s check. Tucked among the money were dozens of handwritten notes of encouragement on greasy notebook paper.
Beside me, Mom finally broke, covering her face as she began to sob openly.
Dad swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Guys… I… I can’t…” His voice cracked violently, fracturing under the weight of his gratitude. He couldn’t finish the sentence.
“See?” a biker near the front grinned. “We finally found a way to shut the stubborn bastard up!”
The street erupted with joyous laughter. Dad let out a wet, choked laugh, tears streaming freely down into his beard.
But Rick wasn’t finished. He turned his attention fully to me. “Now, this little collection wasn’t just to save your old man’s pride, Emily.”
