A week later, Marcus’s mother came back.
She didn’t walk in like she owned the place.
She knocked.
Elena answered the door.
His mother stood there holding a small gift bag.
“I brought something for Sofia.”
Elena looked at her.
Then at Marcus.
Marcus didn’t answer for her.
That was important.
The decision belonged to Elena too.
After a moment, Elena stepped aside.
“You can come in.”
Marcus’s mother entered.
She looked around the house.
Then she looked at Elena.
“I owe you an apology.”
Elena said nothing.
“I treated you like a guest who was supposed to serve everyone instead of family who needed to be cared for.”
Her voice shook.
“And I was wrong.”
She reached into the bag.
Inside was a small pink blanket.
“I know this doesn’t fix anything.”
Elena looked at the blanket.
“No.”
“I know.”
“But…”
Elena took it.
“Thank you.”
Marcus watched from the hallway.
He didn’t know what their relationship would look like after that.
Maybe it would take months.
Maybe longer.
But something had changed.
There were boundaries now.
Clear ones.
And for the first time, Marcus’s mother understood that being family didn’t mean having unlimited access to someone’s life.
It meant earning trust.
