Daniel assured me that I was simply adjusting to married life. Before long, he started answering questions for me when we were around friends, explaining that I needed additional rest.
One afternoon, Helen visited and immediately noticed how tired I looked. When I admitted that I sometimes didn’t feel like myself, she urged me to consult my own doctor.
Daniel appeared carrying flowers just as she made the suggestion. His smile briefly disappeared before he promised to arrange an independent appointment, but the appointment never happened.
A few evenings later, I entered the kitchen unexpectedly and found Daniel standing beside my cup. He was carefully squeezing several drops from a small dark bottle into the warm milk.
I stopped in the doorway, staring at his hands.
“What did you just put in my drink?”
Daniel turned sharply, clearly startled by my presence.
“Nothing unusual, sweetheart. Just a little flavoring.”
