“Did you sign it?”
“No.”
Laura’s voice hardened.
“Within weeks, I lost my job. My professional reputation was damaged, and I spent years trying to prove that the records had been altered. I couldn’t establish everything I suspected, and I eventually walked away because I had nothing left.”
She looked directly at me.
“But I kept copies of documents that I believed might matter one day.”
I remembered the envelope in my handbag.
“Do you have evidence involving me?”
Laura nodded slowly.
“I have a document dated before your wedding. It suggests that Daniel knew you were being considered for the program before he proposed.”
The world seemed to stop.
“You’re saying he chose me because of the research?”
“I’m saying the timeline raises serious questions. I can’t tell you what was in his heart, Margaret. But I can show you what he wrote.”
She opened her bag and removed a folded sheet of paper.
