Then I forwarded the message to Helen and told her where I was going.
I wasn’t foolish enough to walk blindly into a potentially dangerous situation. I arranged to meet her nearby, shared the location with her, and decided we would seek help if anything felt wrong.
At three o’clock, I stood outside the abandoned research center.
The building looked nothing like the elegant medical facilities Daniel had taken me to. Several windows were boarded up, weeds covered the entrance, and a faded sign hung crookedly above the main doors.
A woman emerged from a side entrance.
She was in her early forties, with tired eyes and dark hair pulled into a loose bun.
“Margaret?”
“Yes. Are you Laura?”
She nodded.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked at me with an expression that made my chest tighten.
“He married you, didn’t he?”
“Yes.”
Laura closed her eyes.
