“Who delivered it?”
“A woman who identified herself as a former employee of the clinic. She refused to leave her name, but she insisted that you receive it personally.”
I tore open the envelope.
Inside were several printed emails, photocopies of medical records, and a photograph of three people standing outside a modern research facility. I recognized Daniel immediately. He was younger in the photograph, perhaps twenty-six, and stood beside Dr. Adrian Cole.
The other two people were strangers.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date from five years earlier.
Beneath it were six words.
THE FIRST TRIAL DID NOT END WELL.
I looked up at Dr. Reeves.
“What does that mean?”
He studied the photograph before answering.
“I don’t know the complete story. But I recognize the facility. It was connected to a private research initiative that was discontinued following serious concerns about its procedures.”
