Layla froze.
Her mother turned toward her.
“Layla, uncover your face.”
Her fingers began trembling.
If she lifted the veil, Zayd would see Nour.
And within seconds, the modest, untouched, virgin daughter her family believed in could disappear forever.

Layla slowly reached for the veil.
Then Zayd suddenly said:
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
He reached into his pocket.
And pulled out a small earring.
Layla’s earring.
The one she had lost the night before.
Zayd stared at it.
“A woman left this in my room last night.”
Layla could barely breathe.
Then he looked directly at her covered face.

He paused.
“…her voice sounded exactly like yours.”
The room went silent.
Layla’s father slowly turned toward her.
Her mother stopped smiling.
Zayd leaned forward.
“Layla… show me your face.”
Her trembling fingers grabbed the edge of the veil.
And as she slowly began to lift it, Layla knew that in the next few seconds, everything her family believed about their “modest virgin daughter” could be destroyed. 😱
