Everyone Judged Ray for the Fifteen Years He Spent in Prison—Until His Secret Garden Saved Our Family

But eventually, the doctors agreed she could return home with the appropriate support and follow-up care.

The day we brought her home, Ray had already moved her favorite chair beside the kitchen window.

From there, she could see the garden.

She settled into the chair, looked outside, and smiled when she noticed the table beside the driveway.

Ray was carrying a basket of tomatoes toward it.

My mother watched him for a moment.

Then she turned to me.

“You finally saw it, didn’t you?”

I frowned.

“Saw what?”

“What your uncle has been doing all these years.”

I looked at her in surprise.

“You knew about the shed?”

“I knew he was storing food. I knew about the garden. I knew he was saving money whenever he could.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She gave me a tired but affectionate smile.

“Because Ray asked me not to make a big deal of it.”
