EVERY MORNING, MY GRANDMOTHER FED THE “STRAY CAT” ON HER PORCH. THEN MY FATHER CHECKED THE SECURITY CAMERAS AND DISCOVERED WHAT HAD BEEN SLEEPING OUTSIDE HER WINDOW.

“Daniel, I didn’t know.”

“I know you didn’t. That’s why I’m here.”

He sat her down and explained that cougars were powerful predators. Even an animal that appeared calm could react unpredictably, especially around food or when startled.

Grandma listened quietly.

Then she whispered, “But he never tried to hurt me.”

My father softened.

“I believe you, Mom. But we can’t assume he understands us or that he will always behave the same way.”

She looked toward the window.

“I suppose you’re right.”

Wildlife officers arrived later that morning. They examined the camera recordings and discovered something that made the situation even more concerning.

The cougar hadn’t visited only once or twice.

It had been coming to the property for weeks.

The footage showed it approaching the porch at different times of day, eating the food Grandma left behind, and occasionally resting near the steps.

In one recording, Grandma could be seen sitting in her rocking chair while the cougar stood several feet away, watching her through the glass door.
