EVERY MORNING, MY GRANDMOTHER FED THE “STRAY CAT” ON HER PORCH. THEN MY FATHER CHECKED THE SECURITY CAMERAS AND DISCOVERED WHAT HAD BEEN SLEEPING OUTSIDE HER WINDOW.

It was a reminder that the natural world is often more complicated than our assumptions.

The cougar hadn’t become Grandma’s pet. It hadn’t appointed her its protector or decided she was its family.

It had found food, returned to a familiar place, and behaved in a way that had fooled a woman who believed she was helping a stray.

And Grandma, without knowing the truth, had responded with the same instinct that guided so much of her life: she saw something hungry and wanted to help.

Today, she still keeps a small bowl of water outside for birds and other harmless visitors.

But there is no more food on the porch.

When people ask her about the famous “cat,” she laughs and tells them the whole story.

Then she always finishes with the same sentence.

“He was wild, and I should never have gotten so close. But I’m glad we found a way to send him home safely.”
