My daughter jumped up, her face turning white.
“Mom! You weren’t supposed to find us!”
“Tell me the truth! Does Daniel have something to do with this boy?”
Emily covered her face and began crying.
What she revealed next changed everything I believed about her.
Daniel already had a son from a previous relationship.
Five-year-old Jamie had been born with serious mobility problems. His mother, Laura, had left Daniel because of his controlling and abusive behavior.
When Laura became seriously ill, Daniel tried to take control of Jamie’s care, although he refused to pay for the boy’s rehabilitation.
Emily had discovered Jamie’s existence during the fifth month of her pregnancy.
One day, she’d seen a message on Daniel’s phone. Laura was begging him to help with their son’s medical expenses.
