I was terrified.
“Where have you been?”
“Don’t ask.”
Over the following week, she disappeared three more times. Each time, she returned completely exhausted, but there was a strange determination in her eyes.
Meanwhile, I noticed that the baby clothes I’d bought for my future grandchild had disappeared from her bedroom.
Finally, one night, I decided to follow her.
Emily got into a taxi and headed toward the outskirts of town, where an old maternity hospital had been closed for years.
When she entered the building, I quietly approached a partially open window.
From inside, I heard a woman’s desperate voice.
“Emily, this can’t go on! If your mother discovers what you’re doing with that child, she’ll never forgive you!”
Then I heard my daughter’s reply.
“My mother already thinks I’m a monster. Let her keep thinking that. The only thing that matters is that Daniel never finds out who we’re planning to get out of here.”
