No protected assets had been liquidated.
PART 5 — THE PHONE CALL CHARLES RECEIVED
The call that drained the color from Charles’s face came from the bank’s
fraud department.
I learned that later.
He had expected a transfer.
Instead, he was told the request had been suspended and that further
communication should go through counsel and the trustee’s review
process.
Charles called me seventeen times from the house.
I did not answer.
Then he texted:
WHAT DID YOU DO?
A minute later:
YOUR MOTHER LIED TO YOU ABOUT EVERYTHING.
Then:
WE NEED TO FIX THIS BEFORE YOU MAKE IT WORSE.
Samantha read the messages.
“Do not engage.”
Police remained at the house while Charles collected basic personal
belongings under supervision.
He was not instantly convicted of anything.
He was not stripped of every marital right because I accused him.
But the officers documented my allegations and injuries, and Charles was
instructed not to return that night.
Courtney left separately.
By midnight I was still pregnant.
Still contracting.
Still terrified.
And, for the first time, no longer confused about who Charles had
become.
PART 6 — MY DAUGHTER ARRIVES EARLY
Labor progressed the following morning.
At thirty-four weeks and five days, my daughter was born.
