That realization hurt more than the numbers.
PART 11 — MOM’S LETTER
Samantha gave me a sealed envelope.
My name was written in Mom’s handwriting.
Claire.
I waited until Maggie was asleep against my chest.
Then I opened it.
Mom had written the letter months before the accident.
She did not accuse Charles of forgery.
She did not predict the porch.
She wrote that she worried I had begun surrendering too much
decision-making because pregnancy losses and grief had exhausted me.
You are generous, she wrote. Generosity is not the same as surrender.
She explained that the trust was designed to give me time.
Not to control me.
Not to punish Charles.
Time to obtain independent advice before major decisions.
At the bottom she had written:
If I am ever not here to remind you, remember that love does not require
you to sign something you do not understand.
I pressed the paper against my chest and cried quietly so I would not
wake Maggie.
Mom had not built a revenge device.
She had built a pause button.
That pause had saved assets Charles expected to move quickly.
PART 12 — THE HOUSE
When I was discharged, I did not immediately return home.
