During our divorce hearing, my husband laughed in front of the judge and called me his “pack mule,” claiming I’d contributed nothing to the restaurant we spent twenty years building.

The judge opened the folder.

He studied the first page, then the second.

His expression changed.

“Mr. Hale,” he said, “did you disclose all insurance settlements and business accounts during discovery?”

“Of course,” Victor answered immediately.

“Then perhaps you can explain this.”

The judge turned a document toward him.

Victor glanced down.

His face went pale.

I watched him read the heading again, as though looking at it a second time might somehow change the words.

“What is this?” he demanded.

“The bank record associated with an account you claimed did not exist,” Grace replied.

Richard Cole snatched the document from his client and began reading.

“This account received a transfer of seven hundred and forty thousand dollars from an insurance settlement,” the judge said. “The funds were subsequently distributed to several companies, including one registered under the name of Melissa Grant.”

Melissa’s expression changed so quickly that I almost felt sorry for her.
