I gripped the edge of my chair.
Several million dollars.
For years, Victor had told me that money was tight whenever I asked about the business.
He had said we could not afford to replace my old car.
He had said the house needed repairs but that we should wait.
He had told our daughter that her father was building something important and that we all needed to sacrifice a little longer.
Meanwhile, he had been moving money into accounts I knew nothing about.
“Did he use the insurance settlement?” I asked.
Peter nodded.
“Part of it. The remaining funds were distributed among several accounts and investment entities. We are still tracing the money.”
Grace leaned forward.
“There is something else we need to discuss. The accountant’s letter refers to a second document, one that was not included in the original envelope.”
I looked at her.
“What document?”
“A private agreement signed before the fire.”
